Mabuhay! My name is Rem Tanauan, and I come from the Philippines. I would like to invite everyone to join with me as I begin my journey through my book entitled The Soul of Loving, with subtitle The Emergence of the New Understanding of Love.
Perhaps the word Love has influenced our lives more than any words in all languages. It has brought us a lot of meaning, and Love becomes synonymous to our beliefs, which includes our belief in God or in any higher being. Both our right and wrong choices, successes and failures in many aspects, especially relationships and self-esteem have revolved around our conceptions and misconceptions on Love. We have spoken phrases like "I love you", "falling in love", "love at first sight", "love is blind" and many others, and we have believed that Love only falls short of the thrills and ills of romances or any forms of relationships. Hundreds of novels, films, songs, and poetry have been published in the name of Love, yet we still have this insatiable need to grasp its authentic definition. We have been overwhelmed by this nagging feeling that even if we are so familiar with Love, the true experience of it eludes us. As a young teenager some years ago, I have committed such pitfall, thinking that Love is just a passion or raging emotion that behooves me to act in ways I find it loving. Following many years, I have discovered that there is more to what Love has led us to believe. This book offers you this new insightful paradigm that expands us from the confines of how we and our society understands Love.
In this paradigm, I would like to bring you to the obvious yet unnoticed essence of Love. It explores different points, such as the nature of Love not as a fixed definition, as we have always thought, but as a confounding mix of paradoxes, contradictions, opposites and thin lines. This mind-boggling nature of Love touches its mysterious core, and gives us the advantage to become aware of many confusions in moments when we are about to make decisions and choices amidst our life's challenging issues. I have come to this point in my life that sharing and teaching about Love is both my vision and mission. Out of this heartfelt desire, I began to hold gatherings I called Pathfinders' Commune, where we can have the opportunity to talk, listen and inspire each other, focusing on our own insights and experiences on Love. Through this endeavor, I have brought my loved ones, close friends, students, kindred spirits and strangers into a new way of seeing Love. Their newfound meaning of Love has transformed their lives as they begin to forgive others, to enjoy their moments, to search for answers, to face their fears, to strive to be open and loving and to accept things as they are. They have redefined Love in its most heart-warming, thought-provoking, and soul-stirring ways. Charting this new path of Love for these people has dramatically changed my whole life as well. This book is the result of this transformation, and I would like each and everyone of you to find the same path of Love that awaits us, and together we commune in Love.
